New York Times Building

New York Times Building
Architect: Renzo Piano
Location: New York, NY
Status: Under construction

Software was developed to generate fish-eye "cameras" used to predict incidence of direct beam radiation.

This 50-story tower for the New York Times headquarters is clad with a highly transparent glass curtain wall and exterior white ceramic pipes. To control sun penetration and provide visual comfort while optimizing energy efficiency, automated diffusing shades are controlled in response to sky conditions, the movement of the sun, shade patterns and brightness. L+U assisted MechoShade in developing the solar prediction component of the shade control system so the shades are responsive to shadows from the surrounding skyline. This unique shade control system optimizes the use of daylight and connection of the office interior to the outdoors.

The Times facade is a multi-layered skin composed of a ceramic rod screen mounted in front of a clear glass curtain wall.

Full scale mock-up of typical floor shows locations of virtual fish-eye cameras.
