SCHEMATIC DESIGN

The techniques we bring to the evaluation and development of the design in this phase are more sophisticated than those we use in the Conceptual Design phase and help to confirm the design details enough for a schematic cost estimate. This includes, again as appropriate to the design, site and budget:

• siting and orientation of building and outdoor spaces

• determine and sizing of water retention strategies

• DOE 2.1e parametric analysis of energy factors: envelope, insulation, infiltration, building orientation, scheduling, etc.

• aperture size and location for daylighting

• floor to floor heights and structural coordination for daylighting apertures

• initial daylighting illumination and glare evaluation with physical models in the artificial or Radiance computer simulations

• initial electrical lighting design (interior and exterior)

• lighting control strategies

• sun penetration and shade conditions in 3D Studio animation for indoor and outdoor rooms

• wind-tunnel studies of ventilation strategies on site and for individual rooms

• thermal mass sizing

• shading design

• initial comfort analysis

• long life and loose fit building structure considerations

• LEED organization of design and building team
